Sedation Dentistry
For many patients, sedation is the best way to make dental visits more efficient and less stressful. Dr. Scraver offers nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation to help you feel at ease during your dental treatment.
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a colorless blend of oxygen and nitrous oxide gases with a pleasant smell and taste. When inhaled, nitrous oxide creates a sense of well-being and relaxation while still leaving you fully conscious throughout treatment. Nitrous oxide increases your pain threshold and, when necessary, makes the administration of anesthetic injections more comfortable. It is also helpful for patients who have a strong gag reflex that interferes with dental treatment.
- Nitrous oxide is one of the safest anti-anxiety agents used in dentistry and has very few side effects.
- Feelings of calm and relaxation are felt almost immediately, and breathing pure oxygen for several minutes after treatment completely reverses the effects.
- Nitrous oxide is non-addictive, and you will remain fully conscious throughout treatment.
- Administration is comfortable and painless, involving only a mask over the nose. This makes it an excellent option for children with dental anxieties and individuals with mental or physical disabilities.
Oral conscious sedation, sometimes referred to as “relaxation dentistry,” is another option we offer to help patients become as comfortable as possible through a simple pill. Some people mistakenly call it “sleep dentistry,” but though patients feel very calm and relaxed during treatment, they are still awake and able to respond.
Most patients experience little to no discomfort or remaining effects from a sedation dentistry visit. You might feel a little wobbly immediately after treatment while the medication wears off, but we will give you simple, helpful instructions for the rest of your day. Plan to have a companion drive you to and from your appointment.
